Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your company?
White Peacock Album Design is a bespoke wedding album design service creating stunning and unique storybook wedding albums and coffee table books. It’s run and operated solely by me, Gill Challis. The first album I designed was my own Wedding Album 6 years ago. I really enjoyed having the freedom to bring my wedding photos to life and it was from this that the idea of offering this service to other couples and photographers was formed!
What is your favourite part about creating wedding albums?
I love both beautiful photography and weddings! I really enjoy taking a couple’s photos and turning them into a stunning visual layout telling the story of their big day.
Do you have any set packages for couples to choose from or is everything bespoke?
Although I only offer two types of album, because there are lots of different covers, size and pagination options, there are many possibilities as to how the finished album will look and cost. To make it easier for couples to decide, I do offer some set packages based on my most popular sellers and which cover a range of prices. All packages include full design with revisions, a black presentation box and p&p.
The packages start with the Bronze Package – a 10×10 or 12×8 inch Flush Mount Album with a Photo cover and 15 double page spreads which costs £385.
The Silver Package is by far my best seller. It’s a 12×12 or 14×10 inch Flush Mount Album with a Photo cover and 20 double page spreads which costs £525
The Gold Package is a 14×14 or 16×12 inch Flush Mount Album with an Acrylic photo cover and 20 double page spreads which costs £632.75
Finally the Platinum Package 14×14 or 16×12 inch Flush Mount Album with a Real Leather cover and 25 double page spreads which costs £771.75
I also offer Fine Art Albums and Coffee Table Books and I can quote for any album not covered in my packages.
How do your products compare with others currently out there? What makes you unique?
I design all my wedding albums from a blank canvas without using pre-prepared templates. This gives me the flexibility to design the layouts and style to a client’s taste and to really get creative. I found that using templates was sometimes like fitting a square peg into a round hole! I also offer a range of professional albums (through an award-winning British supplier) in many different sizes and styles so clients can choose their perfect album; whether that’s a large contemporary flush mount album with an acrylic cover or a traditional elegant Fine Art album with beautiful leather cover. I really can tailor make both their album and the layout to suit their taste, budget and their photos!
What are your favourite designs when it comes to wedding albums and why?
I offer three key styles on which I base all my designs on…Fresh, Flaunty and Stylish. They are all quite different. Fresh is a simple layout style using white space, Flaunty really makes the most of key photos filling the page and Stylish is somewhere in between. I really like all three as they each have their own merits and work best with different styles of photography. But at a push I have to say my favourite is the Stylish style……it offers a bit more creativity to the Fresh style without being too full on like the Flaunty style. I designed my own album in this style.
Can you explain the process for a couple purchasing an album?
Once we’ve had a chat and the client has decided on their album and sent over their photos, the first thing I do is organise the photos so I know the generic order and which photos will work together on a double page spread. I then design a couple of sample spreads to make sure the client is happy with the style and design before going ahead with the rest of the album. Once they’re happy with the album design I’ll then order their album and any extras.
How do you work with the couple to create their vision for the album?
Once the client is happy with the samples I’ve designed, I’ll work on the rest of the album. I always supply on average 2-3 different layout options per spread so the client gets more of an input into their album and I’m more than happy to revise any layouts that clients are unsure about.
What are the benefits to going with album designers over couples doing it themselves? Are you able to retouch photographs that the couple already have?
Designing an album may seem quite straightforward but can be a time-consuming process, especially if you’re not particularly creative. It can be quite tricky sometimes to make sure the layout is best conveying the story of your wedding day and highlighting those key precious moments. Professional albums from high-quality suppliers such as the ones I offer are also not usually available direct to the public, only through designers and photographers. I am able to retouch photographs where necessary but I prefer to leave this up to the photographer.
What advice would you give to brides who are currently considering album designers?
Make sure you take a good look at their work and how flexible they are with their designs. You can usually get a feel for the sort of work they produce through their website. If all their albums look similar and are quite different to how you envisage your album looking then they may not be that flexible or offer a style that suits you. It’s also good to make sure the finished albums themselves are what you are looking for as there is a great deal of choice on the market.
