For this travel loving couple, it was only right to go somewhere breathtakingly beautiful to exchange wedding vows and it doesn’t get much more spectacular than being surrounded by the crisp blue ice on top of Spencer Glacier in Alaska. Alaska was their destination to enjoy not only eloping, but to embark on the next chapter of their journey together as they mean to go on, arm in arm, as a family exploring the wonders this world has to offer.
Josh and I met in Africa, on a tour, in 2012 and became good friends. We were from different cities and I was midway through a round the world trip, so it wasn’t until 8 months later when I came to Adelaide to visit that we started seeing each other. In 2014 I made the move to Adelaide and in July 2015 we found out I was pregnant. In March 2016 Mia was born and then we started to plan our first overseas trip as a family…Canada and Alaska for my 40th birthday in May. Once we booked the trip we talked about getting married in Alaska….so the wedding planning started in November and we still weren’t even engaged! On Australia Day, at Carrickalinga Beach, Josh proposed (with a ring we had designed together) and it was official!
We wanted our wedding day to be just our little family. We both love to travel and hope that it will always be a part of our life. Having met overseas, it only seemed natural to start this next chapter of our life together, in a spectacular location. It was breathtakingly beautiful. Words can’t describe how amazing the experience was…saying your wedding vows to the person you love….on top of a glacier.
We flew by helicopter to Spencer Glacier for our wedding vows & photos. Then afterwards we visited Virgin Creek Falls (near Girdwood, where we were staying, 45 minutes from Anchorage) to take some photos in the forest.
I’m pretty sure helicopter isn’t your usual transport for a wedding….it was amazing. We had a bit of a scenic flight first before landing on the glacier thanks to Alpine Air Alaska.
I found my dress at Luv Bridal in Adelaide. The girls there listened to what the dress was for, my style and my budget. It wasn’t the first dress I tried on but I knew it was the one. I felt like a princess and just knew my husband would love it.
Hair & Makeup
I did my own makeup using Napoleon products. Josh loves me looking as natural as possible so it was easy to do myself and keep me looking like me. I found a local hairdresser before we left home and literally just turned up on the day with a few Pinterest photos for ideas …I hadn’t even seen my flower crown yet! I loved the way it all came together and it was beautiful.
Although I bought a gorgeous pair of Badgley Mishka shoes, the only shoes I wore were my old snow boots from the years I lived in Canada. I actually loved the contrast! And boy were they a good choice on the slippery ice! I wore a half flower crown that matched my bouquet and only wore a simple pair of diamond earrings that Josh had bought me for my 40th birthday.
My wedding planner organised my flowers through Bloomsbury Blooms. I had sent some photos of arrangements and flower crowns that I liked and she made it happen. I love peonies and wanted something very subtle yet a little wild.
Our wedding dinner consisted of a supermarket pizza that we cooked in the oven at the apartment we were staying in. We sipped champagne and ate pizza in between phone calls to family back home in Australia telling them the news.
Our wedding planner organised our cake as part of our elopement package through Midnight Sun Cakery. I sent her some photos of what I would like it to look like and what flavour we would like it to be (carrot cake…Josh’s favourite) and it was perfect.
Relic Photographic was on the list of suppliers recommended by my wedding planner. After checking out their work I knew their style from their photography profiles would capture our day just the way we hoped. Hanna was amazing from start to finish!
What more can you say about getting married on a glacier in Alaska? Getting married is such a special and unforgettable life event, doing it the way we did, with just the 3 of us sharing in the moment (well the pilots, photographer and celebrant too!)…it surprised no one that we would do something like that!
Bride To Bride
Do whatever makes you and your partner happy. Getting married is what makes it special, not where, or how big, or who is there, or the weather, or the dress you wear. Looking at each other, vowing to love each other forever.
