Jane & Struan had their special day set against panoramic views of the dramatic New Zealand Hauraki Gulf. Kelly from Blush has excelled at inviting the wild romance of the outside rugged hills into the inviting and warm lodge at Kauri Bay Boomrock with exquisite greenery and pops of blush. With a Hayley Paige rosewood coloured dress that is just so heart achingly beautiful this wedding is a real treat captured divinely by Chasewild.
Struan had just taken me to Europe for my 29th birthday and I was back home in NZ spending a month with my family and friends. EVERYONE was tipped for him to propose in Europe – but I knew that this was not his style.
In the final two weeks of my time in NZ, he flew in to surprise me. Little did I know he was flying in with a ring and to ask for my parents’ blessing and propose. The whole proposal was totally hilarious. He asked my mums permission – to which she burst into tears and said yes of course and then he had to ask my dads. Now, dad is a cyclist and had just got a brand new bike – he totally ignored the ring box sitting there and proceeded to get Struan to help him for several
hours setting up his new bike computer. Poor guy – after two hours mum quickly jumped in (sensing he needing saving) saying “Geoff, Struan has something to ask you?”
After getting their blessing Struan set the proposal up the following morning for me in bed. I have a terrible habit of waking him up early in the morning. This morning – the only morning in the history of us being together rather then waking up I rolled over and went back to sleep for another 45 minutes. The poor guy lay there with the ring on my pillow waiting….when I did roll over he said: “Would you make me the happiest man in the world – will you marry me?” SHOCKED and totally missing the ring on my pillow I squeaked (he didn’t even get a yes out of me). However, in the process of hugging him, I knocked my ring off the pillow down behind the bed. We had to get up and pull the bed back and hunt and find the ring. It was totally hilarious but very us.
NZ has always been my home to be despite spending most of my life living abroad. Struan has also fallen in love with the country (and is a huge All Blacks supporter). We wanted our day to show the best of what NZ has to offer in terms of scenery, food, wine and generally that laid back friendly persona kiwis are known for. We wanted to avoid the rustic look and wanted something romantic, warm and intimate.
We held the wedding and the reception in one place. We really wanted our guests to have a good time so didn’t want anyone to worry about moving their cars, or getting home. My cousin actually found the venue, Kauri Bay Boomrock, and we fell in love with the view it offered but also the team. They were so friendly and after only looking at their venue I booked them straight away – not needing to see any others. They had an amazing menu too which they allowed us to customise.
We tried to make sure everything tied together for the wedding and wanted the colours and the theme to flow. The save the date and the invites are the first impressions of your big day. We knew we would feature lots of roses and I had fallen in love with these stunning blush pink roses from our florist – we built everything from there. Struan actually made and designed all the wedding stationery. He has a fantastic design eye and it was lovely to have him play such a big part in making these for us.
My uncle collects Chevrolets cars so we asked him if we could use his cars. We used his 1959 Chevrolet Impala and a Chevrolet Suburban both in Tiffany blue. It was so special having my Aunty and him there the morning of our wedding they were such a lovely calming force in our big day.
I had fallen in love with the US designer Hayley Paige. However, with no stockist in KL, Malaysia or NZ I didn’t think I would be able to get my dream dress. After calls to stores in the US, Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand and Australia I was able to find a stockist, but as I was after a dress from the new season it was not available. Thankfully The Proposal in Singapore took pity on me and specially ordered in the Hayley Paige Lorelei dress for me. I tried on a range of designers, however, none suited me however once I got to the Hayley Paige dresses I was like yes this is the designer I have to wear. Once my Lorelei gown was on I fell in love and that was it. The next decision was the dress colour – I had only tried the white but really wanted the rosewater. It was a huge decision with only a fabric swatch to go on my mother in law was the one who said: “I think you need to get the rosewater.” When I went for my first fitting I was so happy – I knew I had made the right decision.
My dress had so much drama I wanted to keep it simple. I wore pearl studs which my father in law had gifted me for Christmas. This was after he found out I didn’t own a pair.
Hair & Makeup
We actually used two makeup artists. As Straun has had his sisters as part of his bridal party I wanted them to feel special and have their hair and makeup done. For the groomswomen we used All Made Up who was actually the sister of our florist. For my bridesmaids, we used the exceptionally talented Grayson Coutts. Grayson was an amazing calming force on the morning of the wedding and is incredibly talented.
My bridesmaids and my hair were done by my incredibly good friend Mel Martin from Fringe On Crown who flew in for the wedding from Sydney and did all our hair as a wedding gift. (It was her 3rd wedding in NZ that month!) It was so special to have her there for the morning of the wedding and also be part of our day. She also had to quickly redo it after it got totally windblown. She has been doing my hair for years and has such a great understanding of what my hair will and won’t do. I trust her to the moon and back – I knew I was in the best hands.
Groom & His Men
My groom has a great eye for colour – but we also wanted something the groomsmen could all wear again. The suits were custom made through Jessie & Sons in Bangkok Thailand. They are incredibly talented and were recommended to us by some close friends who used them for their wedding suits.
Our bridesmaids’ dresses were filled with drama – after finding the perfect dress it arrived with my sister in law and it was a total disaster. The second dress we ordered (to my other sister in law) never turned up so we had to quickly find something else (this was 3 months before the wedding). Thankfully we found the Jenny Yoo Inesse dress but being peak wedding season in the US all the dresses were sold out online. Thankfully the NY Jenny Yoo boutique took pity on me and allowed me to purchase over the phone and then I arranged for shipping. Their service was amazing and the dresses looked incredible in the photos.
We had a vision for our big day but I could have never ever dreamed up what Kelly from Blush actually had. It was divine. We originally had no orchids however my husband spending most of his life in Asia it felt totally normal to have these added in. We 100% trusted Kelly with her direction and the florals on the day 100% reflected her.
As food is basically life this was another reason we picked the venue we did. They actually let us use the sample menu after falling in love with the food options there. We wanted a proper sit-down meal and lots and lots of food. I always hear from weddings that there was not enough food or it was not good. The Kauri Bay Boomrock team went above and beyond to make sure the food was fantastic. We had canapes to start, then followed by seated entrees and mains, then we had the wedding cake and a cake bar (along with cheeses too) and then late night snacks of fries and pizza.
We wanted a traditional cake but wanted a cake bar too. Our cake was from The Caker in Auckland. I didn’t meet with anyone else and we fell in love with their unique flavours. Our wedding cake was a Fig and Raspberry cake with a vanilla bean cream cheese icing.
We used Chasewild for our photography. We loved their ability to capture really dramatic and beautiful shots. They also have a real gift for catching special moments which they did on our special day – this included some pretty funny shots but this totally captures our family.
We worked with an amazing hire company called Insphire. Bree from their team was amazingly helpful and we were amending quotes up to the week before the wedding. Nothing was too much trouble for her and everything was collected and delivered on time.
After we were married we went off for pictures together. There was a HUGE hill next to our venue which we had to climb. In rain, wind, heels and a wedding dress, I knew I wanted to climb this hill. Once we started we realised there had been sheep up there and they had left poo everywhere. BUT my husband held my hand in one of his and my flowers in his other. It was such a symbolic moment for me, I know regardless of the rain, wind, and sh*t that comes our way he will hold my hand through it all.
