Juanita & Luke

Real Wedding: Juanita & Luke

A beautiful destination wedding for this fuss free bride in Thailand. A samurai sword cake knife and baby elephant blessing made this wedding very UNIQUE.

The Engagement

Luke & I had been together for 15 years prior to the engagement, like all couples we didn’t live a fairy-tale life however you always work through it. There was never any discussion about getting married previously.  We started travelling to Thailand last year and found this to be our happy place. We went back for Christmas/New Year and on the 2nd day that night Luke purchased my beautiful ring and asked me to be his wife. Our engagement party was held in April and then we got married in the October.

We got married in October 2016. We knew we wanted our wedding to be all about us and it went down representing everything we are as a couple. It was most important to us that everyone who loved us shared the day with us and had nothing but a good time.

We had decided to have a destination wedding in Thailand. Including the wedding party, we had a total of 27 people. Being a destination wedding a lot of family and friends could not join us unfortunately. We didn’t really have a theme for our wedding, it all just came together in the end.

Our ceremony and reception were held at the same place, Katathani Phuket Beach Resort. The resort offered a beautiful location in Kata Noi with the most perfect back drop and everything catered for all in one place.

I didn’t spend much time looking for dresses! I spent one day trying some on but I had previously seen a photo of the one I wanted from Bohemian Brides, so the following week went and viewed the dress then ordered it. I’m not the girly girl type, I needed a dress that I was going to be comfortable in and well as something that wasn’t going to be too hot considering it is always hot in Thailand.

We got the mens trousers and shirts from Connor Clothing and the shoes from City Beach. It was a joint decision on what Luke would be wearing, however it was left to him on how he chose to wear it.

My bridesmaids wore tulle ball gown dresses from TwoBirds Bridesmaids in petal and lilac these are a multi way style dress

Both hair and makeup were done by the beautician at the resort, she also did the hair and makeup for the bridesmaids and family members.

My bouquet was fresh frangipanis, white lilies and white Thai orchards. I had a beautiful charm from Bridal Bling attached to my bouquet with a photograph of my grandfather in so he could walk me down the aisle. The bridesmaids were silk flowers of coloured frangipanis and pink roses. Frangipanis are one of my favourite flowers and are found everywhere in Thailand.

We had traditional style Thai food served family style, so there were 8 mains to choose from and you could serve yourself from large dishes placed around the tables. Our cake wasn’t a big part of the day for us – but we loved that we cut it with a samurai sword!!

Our wedding invitation was a 12 page passport style invite including a boarding pass style RSVP card from Destination Wedding Invitations.

Our ceremony had a 3 piece band, Voice Over Duo who are part of the resort entertainment team. They performed during the walk down the aisle, signing certificates, now married, and during the cocktail reception prior to the reception dinner. For the rest of the music I put together music files and just played through the reception for the rest of the night.

The other entertainment we provided was a blessing by a baby elephant during the ceremony, all guests were given the opportunity to have their own photos taken with her.

Our photographer company was WeddingPhuket, they were part of our package booked through the resort for the ceremony. After reviewing their portfolio I decided to extend our package for the entire day/night with them. They were also the company we used for videography which we can’t wait to see.

The day was exactly how we wanted it, where we wanted it and with who we wanted there. Everything from the clothing to the music was us. We had no outside influence to change anything about how it all happened.

  1. Stop and breath. Have a drink during the day getting ready and throughout the reception, just take time for yourself.
  2. Make a photography list of all of the types of photos you want and who you want in them to give to the photographer- this is the only thing I regret not doing.
